How much RAM do you need depends on the software you will be using for programming.
Also, the possibility that your system doesn’t lag during the development depends on many factors, including the configuration of your PC, CPU, and the availability of SSD.
As a programmer, who has been using multiple IDE for years, I found no problem while programming with 8GB of RAM.
Pro Tip: The more RAM you have, the better the user experience will be. But it doesn’t mean that 8GB is not enough for programming.

Is 8GB RAM Enough For Programming?
8Gb is sufficient for almost all of IDE, but it depends on what other programs you are using simultaneously with it.
For an in-depth experiment, I used Visual Studio on the same setup above, and everything worked fine until I launched Adobe Premier Pro simultaneously.
Although I have never launched such software during programming, when I run both applications side by side, my system got a little slower.
Hence, an 8GB of RAM for programming is enough, but keep in mind not to use more than one heavy program at once, you can also take these measures if you are experiencing a slow or lags during development.
Close useless tabs in the browser while programming
Browser tabs can consume a lot of RAM, so try not to use too many tabs while programming.
The use of a lot of unnecessary tabs can increase the RAM usage up to 20% during the IDE, slowing down your programming experience.
Please note that here I am talking about too many tabs, like 20 or 30; it is all okay to simultaneously run an IDE and a limited number of browser tabs without any lags.
Do not use torrent or download heavy software while programming
Don’t run torrent or download any other memory-hogging software while programming for the best experience.
Downloading heavy software while programming will slow down the process.
Do not use too many plugins simultaneously in IDE
It’s okay to use multiple plugins with an IDE, but try avoiding the habit of using third-party plugins, which can increase the RAM memory and cause a lagging experience during programming.
Do not use video or photo editing software while programming
For many heavy applications like Adobe Premiere Pro or Photoshop, RAM is an essential resource for their functionality.
So never try to use these applications while programming for a smooth development experience.
In a word: 8GB ram is very good for programming (standalone environment). If you are planning to work with heavy IDE like Visual Studio, you will likely not find any trouble running it.
Running Visual Studio on an 8GB RAM
A visual Studio is a development software made by Microsoft and provides the functionality to edit source codes and run them. It is one of the most popular IDE among developers.
Personally, I have been using Visual Studio for months on my above system configuration, without any glitches, but if you want to do multitasking, then adding more RAM is something I would recommend.
Should you upgrade to 16GB of RAM for Programming?
More RAM is never a bad option. It can help you work smoothly on your tasks, which reduces the risk of having crashes.
This means that you can complete longer codes without being interrupted. You’ll also be able to do more multitasking with ease as compared to when you have only 8GB RAM.
16GB RAM will also help you if you do a lot of research and run several other applications during development.
But it doesn’t mean that you should definitely go for an upgrade. I have been doing programming on 8GB RAM and never faced any trouble.
Also, upgrading your RAM simply because you are running software like Microsoft Visual Studio or any other heavy IDE doesn’t make sense because they are standalone software, so you won’t see any significant performance boost.
Consider using SSD over HDD
If you are a person who wants to code in peace like me, then 8GB RAM can be enough for the best experience, but it is always a good idea to have more.
Also, for lag-free programming, I suggest using an SSD, particularly this one from Kingston, as they are faster, reliable, and durable.
SSD provides an added boost for your system than HDD. They provide better performance for applications that need high read/write speeds, such as IDE.
Also, they don’t cost too much but greatly improves your programming experience.
Having the correct amount of RAM can make a huge difference to the development experience, as it minimizes interruptions and increases the ability to do more multitasking.
8GB is okay for the majority of IDE like Visual Studio, but if you are planning to use them along with other software simultaneously, then upgrading RAM is a good choice.
